Game objective
Clear every lantern wave before the chain reaches the fog gate; one star unlocks the next voyage.
Controls
- Mouse/touch: aim and fire; X: swap; C: slow tide.
- Enter: start; arrows: aim; Space: fire; P: pause.
How scoring works
The website ranks the highest score earned in one main voyage, with shorter active play time breaking equal scores. Challenge, variant and ability records remain separate local records. Older local progress is preserved and is never relabeled as a newly earned online score.
Core mechanics
- Shoot a lantern into matching neighbors: three matching colors clear, while four matching beads brought together by a closing gap trigger a chain.
- Clearing fifteen beads charges a six-second slowing tide. Spend the charge when the chain approaches the fog gate or a fast tide is announced.
- Each fixed voyage contains several waves with a reproducible color sequence. Clearing all waves awards progress; replaying retains the same seed.
Common failure causes
- A lantern reaching the fog gate ends the attempt; spending too long lining up a shot can allow an otherwise manageable wave to reach it.
- Shooting an unmatched color inserts an extra bead into the chain and increases the distance that must be cleared before the gate.
- Mistaking a covered track section for a valid target wastes a shot: lanterns inside the mist bridge remain visible but cannot be hit.
How to recover a difficult position
Pause to inspect the chain and use the preview bead before committing another shot. Swap to a useful color, aim at a reachable matching cluster, and spend a charged slowing tide when space becomes tight. Retry keeps the same voyage seed and preserves earlier stars.

Tips for Lanterns Homeward
- Aim at matching groups nearest the fog gate before building distant chains.
- Read the next lantern and swap when it creates an immediate match.
- Save a slowing tide for a dense wave or a fast-tide warning.
- Use closing gaps to bring four matching lanterns together for a chain.
- Retry a fixed route to learn its waves before pursuing skill and mastery stars.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clear a wave of lanterns?
Shoot into a group of the same color to make at least three matching lanterns; clear every wave before the chain reaches the fog gate.
What makes a closing chain different?
After a group clears, four matching lanterns that meet as the gap closes trigger the stronger closing-chain response.
How do I unlock the next voyage?
Complete all waves with at least one star. Skill and mastery conditions add stars but are not required to open the next main route.
Which Lanterns Homeward scores use the website leaderboard?
Only newly played main-voyage scores use the shared website account. WeChat friend rankings and local ability or challenge records are separate.
Can I play Lanterns Homeward on a phone?
Yes, turn the phone to landscape and use touch aiming. Portrait displays a rotation prompt while the game remains safely paused.
